The ladies of Acacia Lyra play for our guests

Reflecting on our Open House

Most recently, we were humbled by our December 2nd “Coins & Strings” Open House, which – in spite of threatening winter weather on a Sunday – saw the largest turn-out we’ve had in 15 years of hosting our popular annual event.

Upwards of 100 customers, friends and colleagues joined us for some great traditional harp music (by Acacia Lyra), and took in our special displays of world-class Large Cents and a selection of Silver cigarette cases from my own personal collection.

Thanks to the support of many, we were also delighted to present the proceeds of our final “Penny Round-Up” in support of the Almonte General Hospital’s MRI equipment fund, with a total of $1,250 raised (or 125,000 Pennies!).

Coins & Strings 2018 Open House

Coins & Strings Open House marks a special anniversary

We are pleased to be putting the final details in place for our December 2nd Open House, which will coincide with my 30th anniversary of first entering the coin business as a keen-and-green collector, barely out of my teens.

Coin & Strings 2018 posterWe look forward to welcoming our local friends and customers to our gallery, where we will once again be hosting the traditional harp duo Acacia Lyra. We are very fortunate to be entrusted with an encore viewing of the “Melron Pennies”, one of the finest and rarest collections of Canadian Large Cents. Since the sets last public viewing six years ago, it has been upgraded with an exceptionally rare 1859 Brass striking, currently among the two most valuable Large Cents in existence. Do not miss the opportunity to see this remarkable display of Canadian copper numismatic heritage.

Our Open House will also see the culmination of our current “Final Round-up” Penny Drive, in support of the Almonte General Hospital’s campaign to bring a new CT Scanner to town. Many friends and local customers have been generous in their donations of pennies to the cause over these past few weeks, for which we extend our sincere thanks.

Lastly – to further thank our local collecting community for their support over these past 15 years in Almonte, we will be holding a Flash Sale during our three-hour Open House, and offering a 30% discount on virtually the entire store, with the sole exceptions of Silver/Gold bullion and 2018/19 dated Royal Canadian Mint products.

We look forward to welcoming you in out of the cold for some warm cheer, tasty refreshments, and great deals!

Staggering once again for our 4-legged companions!

I am delighted to once again be serving as Grand Parade Marshall for this year’s Almonte Zombie Walk For Hunger, benefiting our local Food Bank, as well as both the Soi Dog (Rescue) Foundation and the Country Cat Sanctuary.

Note: for non-locals who may not get the “inside joke” conveyed in my poster this year – we have just had the pleasure of having a Hallmark Christmas film shot in Almonte over the past month or so, directed by the iconic Megan Follows, A.K.A. the one and only original “Anne of Green Gables”. Notwithstanding the very spectacle of having a crew of 50 filming constantly throughout town for three weeks, I think we all were far more excited about Mrs. Follows’ presence among us!

Alliance Coin sponsors a team in the 2018 Mongol Rally

We’re really delighted to be sponsoring one of the young and crazy teams taking part in this year’s Mongol Rally. This motoring event, which lasts all summer, sees 200+ teams drive ludicrous and ludicrously under powered cars from western Europe to Ulan Ude, Russia (some 25,000km), raising money for charity on the way. All teams raise funds for Cool Earth, as well as charities important to the individual teams.

Team Shenlong is made up of four great guys: Oliver Barber (from Almonte, our local rep on the team!), Markus (German), Grayson and Seth (both Canadian). They’ve identified three additional charities that their fundraising goal will support:

  • Streetkids International e.V.
  • Taiwan Fund for Children and Families
  • British Columbia Schizophrenia Society

They’ve promised to keep an eye out for cool coinage on their route, of course!

2018 Annual Live Coin Auction

I am delighted to report that we continue to steam ahead with preparations for our second annual Alliance Coin & Banknote live public auction, to be held in the Almonte Old Town Hall on Sunday June 10th.

The sale will begin at 10:00 am, with a one-hour break for lunch at noon, before continuing at 1:00 pm.

2018 Live Coin Auction posterThis will be a very diverse sale of 500+ lots, representing virtually every area of the coin, banknote, medal and token fields, as well as some truly unusual items in our “Artifacts,  Collectibles & Bulk Lots” category. With estimates ranging from $10 into the thousands, there will be something offered for every collecting level and budget.

Please note that due to the unfortunate delayed receipt of some important Canadian material, printed sale catalogues will not be available until the actual weekend of the auction. Fortunately, however, complete listings will be available for both viewing and advance bidding on our website by mid-week prior to the auction, once we are able to complete the catalogue and assign final lot numbers.  We do sincerely apologize for the resulting very tight timing, but remain confident you will find it worth the wait.

Beginning this Tuesday the 29th, we are delighted to begin featuring a preview of selected auction highlights on our website, which will continue to expand as we move towards final completion of sale preparations.

Additionally, we invite our local customers to visit us for a preliminary viewing of available lots, this coming weekend.  Alliance Coin & Banknote will be open both Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 to 5:00, for your viewing pleasure.

Live Auction: Sunday, June 10th, 2018

Selected items online for preview: Tuesday, May 29th, 2018

Live Preview In-store: Saturday, June 2nd & Sunday, June 3rd, 2018

As always, my family, staff and I warmly thank you for your continued patronage, and I look forward to your participation in our impending public sale!

Sincerely,

Sean Isaacs
